3/1/2023 0 Comments Online shutter counter![]() This simple website presents users with just two buttons to click-one to choose a file and the other to upload it. One popular online service that makes this easy is Camera Shutter Count, found at. On many Nikon and Pentax cameras, for instance, an image file’s EXIF metadata is delivered right alongside that other useful exposure information and can be accessed by sending the file to a service that knows where to look for the pertinent information. This includes everything from date and time of capture to camera settings, lens data and-in some cases-the shutter actuation number. The EXIF information is metadata stored with every digital image file a camera produces. So whether you’re simply trying to gauge how much life may remain in your camera or you’re preparing to sell or buy a used body, here are four ways to determine the shutter actuation count of your digital camera. It’s just that it can take a bit of work to access it, and the type and amount of work can vary by camera model. All digital cameras do keep track of this information, however. Unfortunately, camera makers don’t exactly offer an odometer on their products to easily display how many actuations a shutter has delivered. Either way, knowing how many times the shutter has been released can be important to a photographer interested in his equipment. More expensive, professional camera models are typically built to withstand a greater number of shutter actuations (well upwards of a quarter of a million, in fact) while inexpensive consumer cameras aren’t built to withstand such use. And much as automobile usage is measured via total miles traveled, camera usage is measured by total frames exposed. Unfortunately, at some point Canon stopped doing this, and the info is hidden in the sys.Just like moving parts on automobiles wear out with use and time, the moving parts on cameras do too. There were websites and programs that could read it, usually for free. ![]() This info used to be embedded in the photo EXIF data, but was not viewable by the user. Just as you should know a car’s mileage before buying or selling, learning how to verify Canon shutter count is a no-brainer if you’re in the market for a used DSLR. Canon DSLRs are generally rated to sustain anywhere from 50,000 to 300,000 shutter actuation before a shutter replacement is necessary (at a cost of several hundred dollars). Pictures are taken when the camera is connected directly to a computer (without a flash card inside).ĭire Studios have updated ShutterCount to version 3.0.Included in the update is the ability to read the shutter actuations on all of the recent Canon DSLRs as well as adding the ability to count the number of times live view and video instances have taken place. The perceived shutter count is 2001, whereas the real shutter count is 9001. The next picture file written by a camera like Canon 5D Mark II will be IMG_2001.JPG. This results in a much lower perceived shutter count than the true shutter count. For example, let's say the filename is edited from IMG_9000.JPG to IMG_2000.JPG. Some cameras, such as the Canon 5D Mark II, will use the card filename to construct the name for the next picture. If a blank flash card is inserted afterwards, some cameras like the Canon 60D will continue previous filename numbering for example, will write file IMG_4102.JPG when shutter count is 3752.The file name is edited to lower the numerical suffix. ![]() The shutter count in this case will be only 3751. If a new flash card is inserted with a file IMG_4100.JPG, then the next picture taken with the camera will be written under IMG_4101.JPG. The numbering then continues with this higher suffix. For example, if the last file written by the camera was IMG_3750.JPG, this indicates that the shutter count is 3750.
